Bfocus: PLEASE TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF?
I am James Asu popularly known as OLAPURPOSE or PURPOSEICON the principal consultant of School of Purpose Discovery International; a coaching, counseling and career building institute. Our mandate is to create an enabling environment where purpose-discovery and phenomenal living is enhanced. And it has raised many leaders, influencers and stars.
Bfocus: TELL US ABOUT YOUR VERY FIRST BUSINESS VENTURE?
I launched the School of Purpose Discovery International in 2011. SOPDI embarked on personal tours and visitations into several schools within Lagos. We noticed that the majority of students are just living their lives with the mindsets of anything goes.
They are merely living without knowing the essence of their existence. Our first major project was an annual event tagged “Global Changers Corner.”And that was in 2011. We converged several of them and youths within the popular ghetto city of Ajegunle.
We started this enterprise as a tool to help as many people as possible to discover their lives purpose and using it to foster a colorful and meaningful existence. It is a platform set out or on a mission to raise a larger number of pacesetters.
Bfocus: WHAT WAS IT LIKE, GOING INTO BUSINESS THE FIRST TIME?
It was like two sides of a coin. It was interesting and also full of many challenges. I did lots of free summits, conferences, and workshops to showcase what we do here at School of Purpose Discovery International because it was self-financed. In fact, it was not an easy task. At times I just felt like giving up but whenever I reflected on the numbers of lives we’ve transformed and helped to discover their essence of existence and using gifts and talents to embellish the cosmos.
It gives me more courage to forge ahead. And I am not regretting getting started. It is one of the best decisions I have made so far. And I ain’t going back any longer. But committed to going further.
Bfocus: IT MUST HAVE BEEN CHALLENGING STARTING THE FIRST TIME. TELL US SOME OF THE CHALLENGES YOU MET?
Just like I said not quite long that, the interesting part is seeing people making a U-turn from meaningless existence into meaningful existence. While the challenging part is having a large heart to transform more lives and with little resources, which always reduces the numbers of people to be reached or impacted. But we thank God for the supplies and supports enjoyed from the sales of my books and other coaching courses to deliver more of what we do for the benefits and uplifts of the human race. We are strongly committed to a lifetime of influence and making a difference.
Bfocus: HOW MUCH HAVE YOU GROWN FROM WHERE YOU STARTED?
Though it is not an easy ride but worthwhile. I am someone who doesn’t joke with personal development. Before my journey into coaching and consulting as a career builder and purpose coach, I don’t cherish reading books or attending training and mind-building seminars or webinars.
But there was an incident on this fateful day and I am always grateful about it. I picked up THINK AND GROW RICH by Napoleon Hill. It changed the trajectory of my life and fast-tracked my journey into purpose-discovery and enlarged my mental capacity.
I am a voracious reader. I am growing daily. I read a minimum of a book every week. I know I have grown through those materials, experiences, and exposures, though I am still a work in progress. Life is all about a process. I am not yet on my ultimate apex but still climbing every day.
Bfocus: WHAT IS THE MOST OUTSTANDING MOMENT IN YOUR LIFE AS AN ENTREPRENEUR?
While starting my career as a coach and entrepreneur I experienced so many hurdles. The most outstanding moment of my life is the day I received an offer from a highly respected TV presenter who gave me an unexpected surprise to come to anchor a motivation section of her morning breakfast show for nine consecutive times on Lagos Television. And that was around 2012 and 2014. It was really one of my happiest moments seeing myself on that platform. And also the numerous calls I received afterward was inspiring.
Bfocus: AND THE MOST DISAPPOINTING TIME?
Hmmm. I don’t always like to talk about this, I only told my sweetheart and one of my bosses at Landover Aviation. It was an ugly incident that occurred while I was still a staff there. I worked for 2 years before going back to school after I received my letter of acceptance.
All through the periods of working there, the company was reserving or rather saving a certain percentage from my salary into my Education Saving Scheme (ESS). They did this for two whole years. So as I was taking my exit they handed it unto me. But on this particular day, I was in a cyber cafe to do something pertaining to my school admission. While checking my emails. I saw one mail that reads thus, you just won a lottery and before it could be wired into my account here in Nigeria via western union transfer. I should pay a certain amount as a processing charge. So I did that.
It was after I have done the transfer at the teller point that I discovered that I have been scammed. I fell victim into ‘yahoo-yahoo’ boys net. It was very painful. That’s why I always advise the young ones that they should not allow greed in their hearts. All my 2years savings and sweats have gone just like that.
It was really disheartening. I learned my lesson in a hard way and moved on. This happened around 2007. Just like I posit in my forthcoming or soon to be released book ”MANDATE TO DOMINATE”, ”Contentment will always bring great gain but lack of it is the sure route that leads to great pain. And lack of contentment will always result in experiencing a great disappointment whether in the short or long run.”
Bfocus: WHAT WAS GOING THROUGH YOUR MIND WHEN GOING INTO YOUR BUSINESS?
The idea on my mind while starting SOPDI was solving a problem or meeting a need.
I want to solve the lack of essence or problem of identity crisis and inability to discover oneself which is so rampant in this age and time. Many people just sleep and wake up without knowing what they are here on earth to do or assignment they were meant to accomplish. And without having that knowledge it will be difficult, if not impossible for them to flourish.
Many people are lost in the world because they failed to discover themselves. And self-discovery is the greatest freedom. You need to pass through this stage or phase before you can access your stardom.
It was because I discovered that I unraveled my writing, creative thinking, and coaching skills. And also that of public speaking. The first thing on my mind is finding myself, my ability and capability. Until you know who you are, there is no way you will discover what you can do. It was Socrates one of the great philosophers who posit that ”KNOW THYSELF”. It all begins from having full knowledge of ONESELF.
Bfocus: WHAT BURNING ISSUES DID YOU HOPE TO ADDRESS?
The burning issues SOPDI and myself are focusing at addressing is that of CAREER MISMATCH, IDENTITY CRISIS & PURPOSELESSNESS. And these are challenges that so many youths across the globe are experiencing today. Many are only picking up courses without first of all sitting down to ask themselves if this is really what they are wired for or born to do on earth. We have started this journey already. Recently during this year’s 2019 International Children’s Day. I gave students of Graceford Schools some expositions and deep insights on these very important subjects.
Bfocus: DO YOU THINK OUR YOUNG PEOPLE HAVE DONE ENOUGH TO LIVE UP TO THEIR FULL ENTREPRENEURIAL POTENTIALS?
It is worthy of note that so many youths across the globe are exploring the opportunities embedded in entrepreneurship. Though the majority of African youths are still lagging behind. We have very little who are truly exploring or fulfilling their entrepreneurial potential to full capacity. It is a terrain that still needs to be explored by so many. And it is high time they embraced that route. Because it is the pathway to conquer that monster called unemployment. Entrepreneurship empowerment is the sure route and way-out.
Bfocus: WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS IN NIGERIA?
Every youth needs to always take note of this; you’re YOUTHFUL to be USEFUL. And your future can’t be colorful if you’re not useful. You’re at the prime of your life. You still have a beautiful future ahead, maximize it well. Maximize your time well in order to live your life well.
The greatest decision you can make is to step out boldly and deliver the gifts and abilities inside you, by doing that, you will attract lots of opportunities. There are several opportunities here in Nigeria. You don’t need to wait (or waste away) until you travel abroad before you can make the essence of your life.
Even when you’re yet to be admitted into any tertiary institution. You’ve done several JAMB but all to no avail. Don’t give up yet. Start doing something positive and productive about your life. Start with what you have from here in Nigeria. Make your life count.
Starting a business may come with some sacrifices and sweats in the short run, but if you can endure or persevere, you will be glad in the long run. Consideration must be given to the location of your business. You need to do a feasibility study before you test run or launch out your business. Your products must be what people need and not what you like or want.
Integrity is key. Please don’t compromise or promise what you can’t deliver. It is better to under promise and over deliver than to over promise and not deliver. Quality service delivery should also be given a top priority.
Integrity is the best commodity. Don’t engage in dirty deals or businesses that can tarnish your image or rubbish your brand. Remember, the integrity of the righteous will preserve them, but the perversity of the unrighteous will destroy them. And he who sows winds should be ready to reap whirlwinds. I pray you won’t use your hands to destroy your colorful future and glorious destiny.
Bfocus: WHAT ARE YOUR VISION AND MISSION?
As an organization (SOPDI) our ultimate mandate is to create an enabling environment where purpose-discovery is enhanced.
As a person (on a personal level) my vision is helping as many people around the world to discover their SWEET SPOTS for LIFETIME IMPACTS and ENDLESS PROFITS.
And I have been doing this via organizing events and hangouts that are helping people to make PROFITS from their GIFTS.
Bfocus: HOW MANY BOOKS HAVE YOU WRITTEN AND WHERE CAN PEOPLE HAVE ACCESS TO THEM?
By the Grace of God, I have written three eBooks, the fourth one will be out by July 8th, 2019. And the title of it is, MANDATE TO DOMINATE. I began writing it since 2013 but I am done with it. It will be ready and launched on an aforementioned day. All of them can be gotten via the contact below: +2348169653332.
